BIO: Suzan Matos
Suzan Matos / AAID Studios is located in the Chestnut Hill section of Lancaster city. Suzan's Architectural And Interior Design Studios residential practice is known for its distinct ability to bring together what's 's old and what's new; creating a sense of timelessness and belonging whether it is new construction, an addition, a renovation, traditional or contemporary.
“My work is about my clients. And if it's an addition/renovation, it's about the house as well. Though much of my work is traditional, good design is about finding and using the best of what each of my clients likes no matter what style … or styles … that may be. As for the house, if there's an existing one, its scale, proportions, and details determine the overall design of the additions I do. In essence, I prefer to have my additions look like they belong to the house and my interiors to look like they belong to my client.”
Though working primarily in Lancaster and the surrounding region for more than 25 years, Suzan has clients in Atlanta, Annapolis, New York, and Santa Barbara. Suzan has also served as Chair of the Department of Interior Design at Pennsylvania College of Art & Design for four years. She continues to teach Continuing Education courses in Interior Design at PCAD.
“Designers must be lifelong students. Keeping up with what is new and learning more about the past is a big part of what we do. As an architect, it is particularly important to know what building products are working and which ones aren't. And as a teacher, I enjoy seeing my students and my clients broaden their own sense of style and design as I present them with new ideas, trends, and concepts.” Suzan trained to be an architect at The Pennsylvania State University, Cornell University, and with Mr. John Davidson RIBA. She considers her time living in England and Italy to be the most significant part of her education.
